This is the sequel to Jennifer’s debut novel Unbelievable, which Unbound readers have already funded. You can buy Unbelievable here.
Neona White is an extraordinary girl trying to do an ordinary thing: the right thing. But when does doing the right thing become Unforgivable?
The human and supernatural worlds are being terrorised by an unimaginable menace, and with her family and friends’ safety at stake, Neona has committed herself to her father’s cause. Confining herself to a silver prison, Neona donates her powerful blood to help Jared DeWitka, leader of the Kindred, manufacture an army strong enough to fight against the Demon-Kindred hordes in the North that threaten their existence. But there are secrets yet to be uncovered about the mysteries of Neona’s supernatural heritage. She soon learns that where there are secrets, there are also lies – and it seems that her hybrid nature is no accident: she is a manufactured being, descended from a twisted web of genetics, leading all the way back to an unimaginable source – a source she will soon meet.
Who can Neo trust? Half-vampire, part-werewolf, her supernatural abilities will not peak until her eighteenth birthday. Her third heritage line – and the abilities that come with it – is still a mystery, and her mother, Selena, refuses to reveal what it is or where it came from. Neona’s boyfriend Mika is grudgingly supporting her decision to help her father create an army of supernaturally gifted clones, but the situation seems to be opening a chasm between them. Arun has reverted to the role of silent observer, while Elyssa’s own secret has been revealed in spectacular fashion – she is no ordinary vampire, but one infected by Demons: insane with bloodlust, completely unstable and one of the very race Jared wishes to wipe out. Elyssa serves as a daily reminder to Neona of why she must fight on – to protect the human world from decimation, and her father’s Kindred from extinction. But is Jared DeWitka’s cause as noble as he claims?
Join Neona on her quest to unravel the threads that bind her superhuman roots as she faces new dangers, encounters more of her extraordinary family and discovers that destiny is waiting in ways she could never have imagined.
Who will tell Neona the truth about her tangled heritage? Who is entitled to redemption for their past mistakes – and who will turn out to be unforgivable?
The world crashed and spun around me, a cacophony of breaking glass, screeching metal and screams. We slammed into the tree and, as the crushed car bonnet began to flicker with small blue and yellow flames, I waited for death. Stillness flooded my mind, sweet after the endless motion of the previous moments, but with the stillness came the understanding that the others were already gone.
‘Please hurry,’ I mouthed, and closed my eyes tightly. The reality was not something I was prepared to face. Not yet. I wondered what death felt like, as a familiar burning heat flooded my body, my heart a galloping rhythm in my chest. Surely I could not be this unbreakable.
‘Get out.’ The order came from outside the car, in a voice I couldn’t quite place. My eyes snapped open.
‘Get out. You need to clear the car before it explodes, or you’ll expose your difference to the world.’
He was standing beside the car, a simple figure in a faded, black t-shirt and ripped jeans – tall and thin, with blond hair and the bluest eyes. He looked angry.
‘For Heaven’s sake, Neona. Move!’
